I have 4 USB slots and I have tried them all with the same results. Reformat the drive with the newer NTFS file system or older FAT32 file system so Windows will be able to recognize it. If the drive does appear to be partitioned, it may be partitioned with the wrong file system. About half an hour later, the hard drive failed audibly and the laptop... Marebear, most USB drives (hdds, flash drives) are formatted to Fat32, this is because there are operating systems which can't read NTFS, Mac computer are a good example. not!!!
