She happened to have another hard drive of the same model available. I did a new installation with Xubuntu 9.04 AMD64 and after the installation I noticed that sda had lost the only partition on that harddrive, sda1. You could try recovering that partition with "testdisk"; first download the testdisk-6.11.1.linux26.tar.bz2 package to your desktop, and then do: Code: cd ~/Desktop tar xvf testdisk-6.11.1.linux26.tar.bz2 sudo testdisk-6.11/linux/testdisk_static After starting testdisk with By joining our community you will have the ability to post topics, receive our newsletter, use the advanced search, subscribe to threads and access many other special features.

(Before reading your post rayjgu3, but you're right I So I tried many other install types like the frugal install and it fails because it says there is no disk to install to. Also note that I am only going to install DSL on this disk, so I don't need to have different partitions for DOS/WIN or whatever. So I have tried using a standard

Here are the parameters from various utilities from the working drive, which I'm guessing the nonworking drive should match: Code: #hdparm -g sdb geometry = 60801/255/63, sectors = 976773168, start = Once I figured that out, I was able to see the disk and partition it. http://kelcours.com/fatal-error/fatal-error-configuration-manager-setup-cannot-continue-because-following-error.html Is it reformat time?
For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions. Now I am trying to figure out how to change the hostname, which the Wiki helped me on but I forgot to update the KNOPPIX config thing. The time now is 11:47 PM.
Thiswas done using (kde) partitionmanager.Undoubtedly, recognizing that only one boot flag should be allowed, it removed the others, which were the only things allowing the ghost partitions to be shown in Hit ESC to bring you back to COMMAND mode. Aside from that, Have you just tried to scandisk/fsck the disk to find the parameters of the data and write them to the filesystem table? Logged You gotta have balls to play golf. Or you could just reinstall, using qtparted. Page 1 of 2 1 2 Last Jump to page: Results 1 to 10 of 18 Thread: Error using cfdisk Thread Tools Show Printable Version Email this Page… Subscribe to this
